How to crochet the eyes for your toy

The eyes are not the only thing we pay attention to when we see a softy. But let’s admit that they play a great role.

This article is devoted to the crocheted eyes that you can easily make yourself.

If we look at the world of amigurumi, we will notice that this method of finishing the face is one of the least frequently used. However, they are a very nice alternative to the eyes made of polymer clay and plastic safety eyes.

Pros and cons

+ This type of the eyes is very safe providing you sew them onto the head securely.

+ They are easy to make in most cases.

+ They can be combined with beads or half beads and safety eyes, which makes them even more attractive for a crocheter.

+ You can make eyes of any shape and any size for your toy.

+ The materials are always available.

- They require some additional time to make them.

- Some crafters think they are not as attractive as safety eyes or eyes made of polymer clay.

There are two types of crocheted eyes.

[if !supportLists]1) Flat eyes

Our designers often use them in potholders and bookmarks.

You just have to crochet two circles of different sizes: a bigger one for the white of the eye, a smaller one – for the pupil.

Here is an example how to crochet flat eyes for your amigurumi. Keep in mind that the size of the eyes will depend on the yarn you use. Feel free to adjust the instructions if needed by adding/reducing the amount of stitches and rounds.

The white of the eye

Work with white color yarn.

Chain 3 and work 12 double crochet into the third stitch from the hook. Join with a slip stitch to form a circle. Fasten off leaving a long tail to sew the eye onto the face later.

Pupil

Work with black color yarn.

Chain 2 and work 8 single crochet in the second stitch from the hook. Join with a slip stitch to form a circle. Fasten off leaving a long tail to sew the pupil onto the white of the eye.

Put pupil onto the white of the eye and sew them together.

You can embroider the spots of light with white color yarn as in Young Roosters Potholder crochet pattern.

2) If you think flat crocheted eyes are not a good idea for your toy’s face, try creating “balls” as in our Baby Rooster Kubrik crochet pattern. Usually such eyes are combined with half beads, beads or plastic safety or glue-on eyes.

Work with white yarn.

Rnd 1. 6 sc in magic ring.

Rnd 2. 6 inc = 12 sts

Rnd 3. (1 sc, 1 inc) x 6 = 18 sts

Rnd 4. 5 sc, 2 inc, 7 sc, 2 inc, 2 sc = 22 sts

Rnd 5. 7 sc, 1 inc, 10 sc, 1 inc, 3 sc = 24 sts

Rnd 6-7. 1 sc in each stitch around = 24 sts

Rnd 8. 5 sc, 3 dec, 13 sc = 21 sts

Fasten off.

Make the second eye the same way.

Stuff the eyes and sew to the head with white thread.

Sew the pupils.
